North American Logistics Company

Introduction & Background

One of our clients from logistics industry was in the process of looking for ways to improvise high availability, security, disaster recovery and scale their database by migrating to Cloud(GCP) from on-prem in real time. With Fournine expertise, we have provided a migration strategy and implemented it to meet our client’s requirements.

Challenge

As part of the migration, our client decided to move their DB from on-prem to cloud with minimal downtime. The client is looking to move to cloud as they are unable to scale as they need. On client’s side, they were using Linux servers to host database with standard disks. Because of which, data retrieval is not efficient.

Solution

Stage 1

We have verified the database which is on-premises server. During the assessment, we found that CloudSQL and MySQL on a VM would be the potential solutions. So we decided to test the both. Then we have connected on-permises to cloud securely using VPC provided by Google Cloud

Stage 2

After connecting, we took the backup from the on-prem and copied it to GCS. Using this dump, we have created a CloudSQL instance and also restored the same in a VM with MySQL. By considering VM instance cost and DBA dependency, we decided to move ahead CloudSQL, which is a fully managed service by Google Cloud.

Stage 3

For prod migration, we have chosen continuous migration approach. In which we have created a DB migration service where data transfers from source to destination in real time. After confirming that we have all the data migrated to CloudSQL then we have routed the application traffic to the CloudSQL.

Outcome

Fournine’s migration strategy and implementation helped the client to move from On-prem to Cloud with a minimal downtime. DB health checks and performance was good as expected
